Develop stronger local institutions
SBI works with partner banks to improve lending/credit tools, focusing on Lending Policies and Procedures, Loan Officer Management, Risk Management, Internal Audit and Control, Asset/Liability Management, Human Resources, Board Development and Governance.

Provide specialized training and capacity building
SBI designs and delivers training programs and curricula targeting SBF loan officers/managers with a focus on developing new and improving existing financial products and services.

New product development
SBI works with local clients to develop new products to fill credit gaps. Examples include the Developing Enterprise Loan (DEL) to reach businesses too large for micro credit but not yet large enough to qualify as small business credit.

Institutional assessment and due diligence
SBI employs an innovative assessment tool to give investors and donors a better sense of a target institution’s financial performance and development impact.

Develop business plans
SBI guides local financial institutions in preparing sound business strategies to achieve their development objectives and to manage growth and develop the necessary systems and performance measures to detect problems as well as opportunities.

Signature Engagement: K-Rep Bank, Kenya
Since 1996, SBI has maintained an equity investment in K-REP Bank of Kenya, and has provided critical strategic input on governance, vision, and growth of the Bank. Since 2004, SBI has also played a direct technical assistance role in development of the MSME portfolio, including developing risk management, corporate governance, internal controls, policies and procedures, human resources and MIS capabilities.

Signature Engagement: Ceska sporitelna, Czech Republic
From 2001 to 2004, SBI worked with the largest retail bank in the Czech Republic to conduct strategic planning around their transition from a state-owned bank to a national subsidiary of the regional Erste Bank Group. By working to clarify strategic vision and roll-out new MSME products to branches, SBI supported spořitelna’s launch into new MSME products by managing disbursal of nearly 1,200 loans valued at $47.7 million.

Since 1988, SBI has worked with a number of large financial institutions seeking to downscale their lending activities to serve small and micro enterprises, and with numerous microfinance institutions seeking to move beyond micro-loans and to enter the world of small business lending.
