Signature Engagement: Jordan
In 1999, SBI worked under a major subcontract to USAID/Chemonics to launch a national microfinance training institute in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The institute aimed to build industry capacity throughout Jordan and the Middle East, and targeted both field officers and institutional managers. In addition to hands-on training in technical topics ranging from loan life-cycle management to asset and liquidity management, the institute provided support to develop a national industry association. With SBI support, the institution was transferred to local management, and now operates as a private, sustainable, fee-for-service provider, which offers training and certification throughout Jordan as well as in neighbouring Gaza/West Bank. From 1999 to 2002, SBI certified 19 local trainers, and graduated 233 bankers and MFI practitioners from professional training courses.
